Generator or home battery — which should I get?
Batteries are silent, fuel-free and get the 30% federal tax credit (generators don't), but they bridge hours-to-days unless paired with solar. Gas standby generators run indefinitely. For frequent short PSPS shutoffs, batteries often win on net cost; for multi-day outage risk, standby generators still rule.
Do I need a permit?
